Exam Structure

Paper 1: Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry

·This paper covers topics: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table, Bonding and Structure, Redox I, Inorganic Chemistry and the Periodic Table, Formulae, Equations and Amounts of Substance, Energetics I, Equilibrium I, Equilibrium II, Acid-base Equilibria, Energetics II, Redox II, Transition Metals

·30% of the exam.

·1 hour 45 minutes.

·90 marks.

·The paper may include multiple-choice, short open, open-response and calculations with extended writing questions.

Paper 2: Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry

·This paper contains the following topics: Bonding and Structure, Redox I, Formulae, Equations and Amounts of Substance, Organic Chemistry I, Modern Analytical Techniques I, Kinetics I, Kinetics II, Organic Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry III, Modern Analytical Techniques II.

·30% of the qualification

·1 hour 45 minutes.

·The paper consists of 90 marks.

·The paper may include multiple-choice, short open, open-response as well as calculations and extended writing questions.

Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Chemistry

·40% of the qualification

·Questions in this paper can be from any area of the Edexcel A level chemistry course.

·2 hours 30 minutes.

·120 marks.

·The paper may include short open, open-response, calculations and extended writing questions.
