The Patriots Pen Essay is an annual essay competition conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), which is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The goal of the competition is to promote patriotism among our nation's youth and encourage them to express their views on democracy.

Each year, the VFW provides a theme that the essay should focus on. The 2020 theme is "What Makes America Great." Students are asked to think about what makes our nation great and write about it in a thoughtful and meaningful way. Essays should be between 300 and 400 words and must adhere to the VFW's prescribed format and rules.

The top three winners at each level (6th, 7th and 8th grades) will receive a monetary award from the VFW. State winners are competing for additional awards and the chance to compete in the National Patriots Pen Essay Competition at the National VFW Convention. The National winner will receive a $5,000 award and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March 2021.

It is an opportunity for students to show their patriotism, creative writing skills, and their knowledge of America. The essay should show how the student is proud of America and how they can be a positive citizen in our society. It is a great way for students to explore the ideas of democracy, patriotism and how they feel about America.
